From favelas to festivals, music opens alternatives to violence.
In Brazil, Afro-Reggae, a music and social arts organization, originated in the violent neighborhoods (favelas) of Rio. They run workshops, concerts, and youth programs that use music, dance, and media arts to uplift young people at risk of gang violence, drug use, or crime. Their work names trauma, provides creative outlets, and builds community cohesion. Over decades, Afro-Reggae has staged large festivals, public performances, and local partnerships to reframe community identity beyond violence.
