South Sudanese Songwriter Mobilizes Hearts for Peace

After the Civil War, music became a tool of social cohesion and truth-telling.

In South Sudan, emerging singer-songwriter Stephens turned to music during the country’s conflicts that began in 2013. He wrote a song, “Arakat Karabu,” that questioned the suffering, loss of independence, and broken promises. His music became widely circulated among youth as a form of social commentary and reflection, encouraging reconciliation dialogues and community healing. Through his work, he positioned music not just as art, but also as a vehicle for civic engagement and awareness.
